Using a Microphone

  1. Decide what microphone configuration you would like to use. Any combination of one wireless handheld, one wireless lavalier, and two wired microphones can be used in the Gathering Place.
  2. The microphones can be found in the tech closet on the second floor, near the Gathering Place. They are stored in the bottom drawer in individual zipper bags. The tech closet also has a floor stand, two small stands and several XLR cables for the wired microphones. This room is locked and will require the assistance of a library staff member with card access.
Gathering Place AV rack in the tech closet with labels for cable tv, Crestron panel, HDMI/VGA, Blu-ray Player, and Microphones.

  4. Set up the microphones and stands.
    • Wireless Microphones: Remove the microphone(s) from the drawer. Turn the microphone(s) on and confirm they have sufficient battery power (both use two AA batteries). Once powered, they will automatically connect to the receiver.
    • Wired Microphones:
      1. Remove the microphone(s) from the drawer. From the wall rack, take one XLR cable for each wired microphone.
      2. In the Gathering Place, go to the wall-mounted Crestron and input panels near the speaker's location. There are two available locations in this space.
      3. Plug the XLR cable into the microphone wall plate and the microphone. Press the metal tab at the top of the wall plate port when removing the cable.
Gathering Place wall-mounted Crestron and input panels with the XLR microphone input enlarged.
  5. Unmute and carefully adjust the volume for each microphone from the Crestron interface. Setting the microphone volume too high can produce audible feedback. If the microphone audio is not coming through the speakers, try muting and unmuting.
NOTE: The wired microphones are labeled "left" and "right" on the wall plate and in the Crestron interface. This designation is based on the audience's point of view, looking at the projector screens.
  6. When finished, turn any wireless microphones off and return all equipment to the tech closet. The microphones should each be placed into their individual zipper bag.
