This 500-year-old Bible has commentary on its Commentary. A previous owner made notes in the margins throughout, often drawing manicules (pointing fingers) to draw attention to passages. Read more.

Renaissance Florence: A Critical Voice

by Girolamo Savonarola (1496)
This book about the Virgin Mary was written by Girolamo Savonarola, a zealous and powerful Dominican preacher who spoke out against the worldly Medici culture of Renaissance Florence. He drew large crowds declaring, "If you obey not my words, you will go to hell." This book was published at the height of his influence. Two years later he was excommunicated and hung for heresy.
