Sustainability

"Sustainable development seeks to meet the needs and aspirations of the present without compromising the ability to meet those of the future." - UN Brundtland Commission, 1987

Sustainability is a complex, multidisciplinary topic, and can be defined in many ways depending on context. It is frequently described in three domains:

  • Environment: The physical environment, encompassing climate, ecology, biodiversity, air, water, and land
  • Economy: Global, national, and local economic factors, including socioeconomic equity, management of and access to resources, financial stability, social innovation and access to goods/services, and corporate and financial activity.
  • Social: Equity, safety, and human rights-focused, centering justice and well-being of people. Includes government policies and corporate practices that impact distribution of wealth, labor practices, health, housing, and social inclusion.

Sustainable Development refers to the practices and policies intended to achieve the goals of sustainability.

In business fields, the pillars of sustainability are often referred to as the "triple bottom line": people, planet, and profit.
