Story Studio

The Story Studio is a dedicated space for media creation in the library. A streamlined, self-service recording studio, editing stations, and specialized kits offer tools to help you create your next media project in the studio or out in the field.

Podcasting Kit

A podcasting kit with the following components is available to check out at the first-floor Hello Desk. Components are packaged into two cases: one hard-shell and one soft-shell shoulder bag. The kit includes:

  • Two PodMic microphones with USB-C and XLR connections — compatible with both the audio mixer included in the kit and most computers.
  • Two small microphone stands.
  • Two headphones with 3.5 mm jacks and 1/4" adapters.
  • One RODECaster Duo mixer with power cable, USB-C cable and XLR cables. Audio can be routed to the RODECaster from a computer using a USB-C cable or from a compatible device through Bluetooth.
  • One SD card and reader. The provided microSD card should be sufficient for 10+ hours of audio recording.

NOTE: If you want to connect the RODECaster Duo to a computer, your system must be macOS 10.15 or later, Windows 10 Version 1803 or later, or Windows 11. A computer is not required — audio will be recorded directly to the SD card.

Kit Borrowing Policies

  • Media kits at Roesch Library can only be borrowed by current University of Dayton students, faculty and staff. Each kit loans out for 1 day and may be renewed for 1 additional day.
    • Patrons can only checkout 1 kit at a time.
  • Media kits are available for checkout from the Hello Desk Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM-5:00 PM. At checkout, patrons will be given a due date and time when they borrow a kit.
    • Kits must be returned to library staff by the given date and time.
  • Patrons must sign a loan agreement form prior to borrowing an equipment kit. This form serves to verify all components of the kit are present and provides details of the loan agreement and due date.
  • Overdue kits will be billed to the patron after 3 days. If the equipment is not returned after it is billed, a registration/transcript hold will be placed on the patron’s account. Holds will not be removed until all billed equipment is returned or the bill is paid.
  • The patron is responsible for any lost or damaged equipment. If the entire kit is lost or damaged, the patron will be responsible for the full cost of the kit. Refunds will not be made if equipment is found after the patron has paid the replacement fee.

Patron Data Files

Roesch Library is not responsible for any data files left on returned equipment. All files will be wiped in order to clear space for future patron use.

Tips

Connections to the RODECaster Duo

The RODECaster Duo has a USB-C power connection, microSD for recording, a USB-C for a computer, 1/4" ports for headphones and XLR ports for microphone
  • Connect the provided USB-C to wall power adapter to the USB-C port near the read power button.

  • Insert the provided microSD card into the slot above the ethernet port. All recordings will be saved to this microSD card by default.

  • Optionally connect a computer to USB-C port 1. This connection allows you to route audio from the computer to the mixer (select the RODECaster from the speaker settings).

  • Connect headphones with the 1/4" adapter to the labeled ports. Volume for the headphones is controlled independently on the mixer (smaller knobs at the top of the mixer).

  • Connect microphones with the XLR cable and adjust the microphone volume with the color-coded sliders. Important: The microphones should not be connected to the mixer with a USB-C cable.

Exporting RODECaster Duo Settings

If you customize any settings of the RODECaster (microphone settings, SMART Pads, inputs, etc.) remember to export your settings so you can make future recording with the same configuration. Library staff will reset the device to its default settings when returned.

  1. Insert a microSD into the back of the device, if one is not already there.
  2. Tap the settings cog.
  3. Tap the 'Show' button, then tap 'Export'.
  4. The display should say the export was successful; tap 'Done'.
  5. The next time you use the RODECaster Duo, you can repeat these steps, but select 'Import' instead at Step 3.

Network Connectivity on Campus

Although the RODECaster can connect to both wired and wireless networks, it does not provide a way to authenticate with the UDConnect network.

Powering the RODECaster Duo with a USB Power Bank

The RODECaster Duo can be powered by a USB power bank, as long as it is capable of providing 30W USB-C PD (15V, 2A). You will get approximately one hour of operation per 10W/h capacity, so a high-quality battery pack will give you around ten hours of power (note: the power drawn from the battery depends on usage factors including screen and LED brightness, USB connectivity, and phantom power status, so results may vary). If insufficient power is provided to the unit, you will see a warning screen indicating so. In this case, either use the provided power supply or a power supply rated to the specifications above.
