Did you know that the houses around campus haven't always been inhabited by University of Dayton students?
In 1920, St. Mary's College had just been renamed University of Dayton to reflect the close relationship that the University and the city strove to build. The 1920 United States Census and 1919 Dayton City Directory reveal who lived in the neighborhoods surrounding UD one hundred years ago. These individuals and families came from all around the world and worked in many different industries, and many of the houses where they lived are still standing today!
Can you imagine who sat on your porch one hundred years ago? How would the student neighborhood have looked and sounded long before UD students inhabited the streets surrounding campus?
During this AVIATE distance learning opportunity, you'll select an available address in the South Student Neighborhood, research who lived at that address in 1919 and 1920, report what you find, and help create a crowdsourced Google Map including some of the information you discover.
You can complete this activity at your own pace. Throughout the activity, you'll be navigating away from this page to fill out forms and conduct research on the address that you select.
If you are completing this activity for PATH credit, you will need to complete each step of the activity and be sure to submit your first and last name and UD email address.
