Digital Accessibility

What is Visual Information Accessibility?

Intentional design and description of images, art, graphs, charts, icons, buttons, and other visual resources is a critical component of digital accessibility. Use of appropriate colors, contrast, and text in the design of image can reduce barriers to visibility, while text description provides context and full access to information provided in documents, on websites, and in video content that is otherwise undiscoverable or unusable to people with visual impairments and other print disabilities. Textual description of visual resources allows for reading with assistive technology and aids in the overall discoverability and comprehension of visual resources for all users.

Best Practices for Visual Information Accessibility

It is best practice to provide a text alternative for all visual information intended to be understood by a human. This includes:

  • Following accessibility standards in the design of visual information
  • Providing Alt Text for images, charts, icons, and other graphic elements in documents, pre-recorded video, and on the web
  • Verbally describing visual elements in live and recorded video presentations
  • Including descriptions of visual information in video transcripts
