ENG 200: Krug

Experiential Learning Project

We have been awarded an Experiential Learning Innovation Fund for Faculty (ELIFF) grant for the Fall 2023 and Spring 2024 semester.

The overall goal of this project is to have students do deep research into a topic that is relevant to our current culture and has the power to transform readers’ understanding of diverse communities. With this knowledge and subsequent project, they can intervene in public discourse by generating a public-facing research work, “The UD Popular Romance Collection,” available to the UD community. This collection invites readers to participate in the same conversations and reflect on the same questions about diversity, inclusion, feminism, and gender roles that the students did during the semester.

Popular Romance Collection

A collection of fiction and nonfiction romance works will be built by the students in Professor Krug's ENG 200 classes. One of the requirements of the student selections is that a majority of the books chosen will necessarily include diverse main characters, such as people with disabilities, inclusive body sizes, LGBTQ+ people, and people of color.

Students will learn about what it takes to build a library collection, manage a budget, and how books are selected and purchased. Students will also learn to use the library's databases to search for book reviews and use this information to inform decision-making and selections.

Once the books are acquired, they will be located on the 1st floor of Roesch Library near the current periodicals.
