Reading call numbers

Every book that you find in the library catalog will have a call number assigned to it.

Call numbers are an alphanumerical system for organizing books by subject. They have corresponding labels on the spine so you can find what you're looking for.

Let's look at an example:

Silencing the Past: Power and the Production of History by Michel-Rolph Trouillot has the call number D16.9 .T85 1995. Here's how we can "read" the call number.

D refers to the general subject area and is organized alphabetically on the shelves

16.9 is ordered like a whole number on the shelves

.T85 is ordered like a decimal on the shelves (the letter is ordered alphabetically)

1995 refers to the publication year, as there may be more than one
