Women's History Month

Our name says “Women’s” but we serve all students, faculty, and staff by promoting the equality of all gender identities, utilizing and modeling an intersectional and anti-oppression framework, and advocating for an equitable University culture and community for all.

Uhuru, the campus newsletter of the student organization Black Action Through Unity (BATU), circulated from 1977 through 1980.

The Black Perspective is an African American student publication that ran from the late 1970s through the early 2000s. The paper aimed to be the eyes, ears, and voice of the UD Afro-American community. Articles and editorials cover campus news, current events, and contemporary issues from an African American perspective.

Honoring the late Joyce R. Durham, professor emerita of English, this contest invites submissions of nonfiction essays that explore issues concerning women and/or gender — from the personal reflection to the research paper, or an excerpt from an honors thesis. Includes submissions from 2006 to 2020.

Voices Raised is the Women's Center's newsletter that is published once a semester and features stories and content with a gender focus. Includes the full collection of newsletters, dating back to 2003.

During Women’s History Month, the Women’s Center coordinates, as an experiential learning opportunity for students, an annual exhibit highlighting the contributions women have made at the University of Dayton.

Women at UD have made some extraordinary accomplishments, and Women’s History Month is an opportune time to recognize them. University Archives and Special Collections’ new exhibit, “Women’s History at UD,” curated by assistant archivist Amy Rohmiller and junior Emily Cordonnier, highlights some of these extraordinary accomplishments.

In 1935, 31 female students were admitted to the newly formed College of Women at the University of Dayton. The admission of women to the campus of UD was an experiment, the brainchild of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, who wanted to build a Catholic college for women on their property. The temporary nature of the agreement with UD administration to hold classes for women on the campus turned into the full admission of women to the University (Alumnus, March 1960, p. 4).

During Women’s History Month every March, we celebrate the struggles and achievements of American women throughout the history of the United States. A 1981 presidential proclamation established the first Women’s History Week (March 7-13, 1982), and six years later, Congress dedicated the entire month to women’s history.
